Wagners Fine Foods History

Tom Wagner – managing director of Wagners Fine Foods - grew up in Hamburg / Germany where his parents were operating a smallgoods factory specialising in smoked Luxham and Kasseler.

After his military service he decided to change his direction from butchering to business studies and graduated in Hamburg with a business degree in foreign trade / Export.

1983 he came out to Australia / Melbourne as branch manager of a German Export House.
Tom Wagner migrated from Germany in 1989 and settled in Melbourne.

Initially Tom avoided to continue the family tradition of making smallgoods as he and his father Kurt have done – and the generation before them.

After difficulties to find a suitable task in his Export field in Australia – Tom researched the local market and discovered a desperate need of quality smallgoods and sausages in Melbourne. He remembered his family tradition and expertise in manufacturing this delights.

In 1993 Tom founded DRIWAG Smallgoods Pty Ltd trading as Deli Land to manufacture German Smallgoods in Victoria and developed with the help of his parents his products suitable for this market. In 1996 he changed the company image and renamed it to Wagners Fine Foods.

His initial target market was wholesale to Delicatessen and Supermarkets - but that changed over times and today he is  specialised in manufacturing / wholesale as well as Event Catering of authentic German Gourmet Sausages.  3 Catering Units on several outdoor events in Victoria as well as Adelaide and Sydney are operated throughout the year.

In August 2007 – Wagners moved into bigger and better premises – purchased better and bigger machinery from Germany – and also opened a Direct Factory Outlet were customers can purchase Wagners German Specialities at wholesale prices as well as other delights such as Bread, Quark or Sauerkraut 2 days a week.

Tom Wagner emphasises on the manufacturing of authentic quality European Delicatessen products and is committed to offer a healthy alternative by keeping away from unnecessary Food additives and excessive use of preservatives as well as not using Gluten, artificial taste enhancers (MSG) or artificial colouring. Only top quality Australian meats are used from local Export abattoirs or Prime Safe and HACCP accredited premises.
